Rob Gonsalves is a Canadian painter who describes his style as magic realism, and which perhaps incorporates the surreal style of René Magritte with the perspective of M. C. Escher. His work uses a lot of repetitive patterns that morph from one form to another to create an illusion. In this short documentary he talks some more about his work.

Ceramic artists, Sally and Neil MacDonell

Sally and Neil MacDonell share a ceramics studio in Bath, UK, but work independently. In this slideshow presentation they discuss their studio, working techniques and inspiration.

Adam Buick - inspired by landscape

Ceramic artist Adam Buick's pottery studio is near St.Davids on the west coast of Wales. He is inspired by the Pembrokeshire landscape, and incorporates slate pebbles and clay from the beaches there into his work which is based on Moon Jars, a Korean form dating from the Choson Dynasty. The name Moon Jar comes from their round shape and the milky color of the glaze, reminiscent of the full moon.

Art duo Wyllie O Hagan are inspired to create a relief print and this film by "The Wild Swans at Coole", a poem by William Butler Yeats.

Mary Margaret Briggs uses plants in her monotype works.

She says little about the physical process, but if you watch closely you can see how the grass is sandwiched between the canvass and the inked plate.

Artists Access to Art Colleges

Artists Access to Art Colleges (AA2A) is a scheme run in the UK that allows artists to work in a university or college setting. It gives selected artists the chance to spend up to 100 hours at the institution during the course of the academic year, where they can use the studios, workshops, lending libraries and lecture programs. The scheme provides visual artists and designer makers with the opportunity to undertake a period of research or to realize a project. There are 22 colleges participating in the scheme. Here is Maggies Ayres, (a textile and mixed media artist), talking about her experience at the University of Cumbria.

Linde B. Martin describes herself as an innovative abstract & modern artist. She works in oils on linen. In this video she talks about the philosophy behind her work, while we watch her technique with various large palette knives.

Blackboards, chalk, pins and paper tags sound like an unlikely combination for making art, but here is Leslie Atik talking about her 2007 show, Marking Language. She says it is about the deeper meaning of language. Grammatical elements are physically marked on handwritten text, revealing patterns evocative of sheet music, and establishing a visual vocabulary.
